Implanted (Dictionary): To fix or set securely or deeply, to set permanently in the consciousness or habit patterns, inculcate (to teach and impress by frequent repetitions or admonitions).
Implanted (Bible): Inborn, ingrown, congenital, natural, rooted, implanted
These days we are seeing more and more types of implants. The Bible does use the word “implant”- but only once in James.
The book of James is filled with guidelines for Christian living and discipline. It is common sense coupled with a heavy dose of Godly wisdom. In particular, James chapter 1 and verses 21 and 22 caught my eye.
James 1:19-22: 19This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. 22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. (NASB)
James is quite clear on his portrayal of God’s word and states that the word must be received in humility. It should become deeply rooted in our spirit. He is not talking about a “wishy-washy” Gospel but a Gospel of resurrection power deeply rooted in our spirit and producing fruit to Gods glory.
When we study the word “implanted” we see what James was picturing. In fact, God’s word is so powerful it guides us to eternal salvation- to all who willingly partake and live the word.
Hebrews 4 has always been a favorite Scripture of mine. It talks about the grace that is ours through the living word:
Hebrews 4:12-16: 12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do. 14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (NASB)
Jesus parable of the sower brings forth the power of the word and reveals the need to implant the word deeply in our spirit!
Matthew 13:18-23: 18 Hear then the parable of the sower. 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road.20 The one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away. 22 And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 23 And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty. (NASB)
What a wonderful picture of the word! Jesus spoke consistently about the need to bear fruit to the Fathers glory. This is done through those who cherish and study the word! As we implant more and more of the word through study and teaching, we grow in strength. And as we grow in strength, we do indeed become fruit bearers.
I am captured by God’s word,
It brings me life and love.
There is nothing else like it,
A gift from high above.
I must read the word each day,
To keep my focus true,
To keep me in the narrow way
Depending Lord on You.
