Quarks Are Small But Powerful

Consist (Dictionary): Conform, correspond, dovetail, fit, go, harmonize.

Consist (Bible): To place together, commend, prove, exhibit; I stand with; to be composed of, cohere.

Mankind continues to seek knowledge about our universe and is usually amazed at what is discovered. Science now has technology which provides tools which can open many doors into God’s creation. For example, there is lots of excitement in “physics land” these days. The new massive cyclotron in Europe is producing some amazing results using the largest atom smasher, physicists have discovered a new particle called Ds3* a meson — a type of unstable particle made of one quark and one antiquark. Quarks are subatomic particles and are the most basic building blocks of matter that make up protons and neutrons. Scientists now know they’re held together by a strong interaction, or “strong force’’, which is one of the four fundamental forces in nature- (Electromagnetism, weak interaction and gravity are the other three.) No stable form of matter would exist without a strong interaction holding it together. Note: As the name implies, this is the strongest force known in the universe!

Strong force is understood in principle, but physicists have yet to solve the equations that describe it. “Strong interaction is such a powerful force that it accounts for more of the mass in an atom than the quarks themselves.” The equation behind the force is incredibly complex. Physicists and mathematicians have grappled with it for years, and now, the most sophisticated computers are trying to crack it.

But why talk about quarks? It’s one of my many quirks, I guess! Well, as it turns out, “strong force” is found in the Bible:

Colossians 13-17 13For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. (NASB)

The expression “held together” is a noteworthy phrasing. Other translations say the same thing but with interesting wording for verse 17:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
17 He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.
17 He was before all else began and it is his power that holds everything together.

So, we see Jesus as Creator God and through Him all matter and energy were created. In addition, we see Jesus holding all things together-down to every atom and molecule! Jesus is THE strong force scientists are looking for.

It is estimated that 90% of all the Scientists that ever lived are alive today! This simple statistic captures the power of the exponential growth in science that has been taking place over the past century. If science is growing exponentially, then the major technological advancements and upheavals of the past 200 years are only the tip of the iceberg! I can’t wait to see what wonders of God will be found.

We could argue that God is about to use man’s newly acquired knowledge to open scientists’ minds to the truth of the Bible. Or that man’s knowledge will bring about cataclysmic events which will shake our world. We don’t know what will happen but one thing for sure is God is in control-quarks or no quarks!

As I have walked upon this sod,
Praising God for His gift of light
I have also stood alone at night
To see His stars so bright

Yet, as I have paused in my walk
To think of man, his ways, and thoughts
Man needs to know there is one path
Jesus is His name.
